Outdoor Training

Train for the places
you want to go.

Outdoor readiness is not about chasing elite fitness. It is about building enough strength, endurance, balance, mobility, and recovery capacity to enjoy the trip safely and confidently.

What are you preparing to do?

Your body is your #1 piece of gear

The best equipment cannot replace the strength, endurance, balance, mobility, recovery, and judgment required to use it well. Outkitted helps people prepare both their loadouts and themselves for the places they want to go — the closet builds the pack, training builds the person carrying it, and the shakedown improves both after every trip.

This is especially for people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond — returning to the outdoors, preparing for a meaningful trip, or staying capable for the next one. It's about capability, not competition.

Train for the trip

Preparation should reflect what the trip actually asks of you, not a generic program:

  • Distance
  • Elevation gain
  • Pack weight
  • Terrain
  • Altitude
  • Trip duration
  • Consecutive activity days
  • Wading requirements
  • Climate, heat, and cold
  • Recovery demands
  • Availability of bailout routes

In the app, a trip's demands surface as preparation areas to consider — a planning tool, never a readiness determination.

The five foundations of outdoor readiness

1

Strength

The ability to carry, climb, descend, stabilize, and repeatedly move equipment.

2

Endurance

The ability to sustain outdoor activity over the planned distance and duration.

3

Mobility

The ability to move comfortably through the required positions and ranges of motion.

4

Balance & Stability

The ability to remain controlled on uneven terrain, river rocks, slopes, and unstable surfaces.

5

Recovery

The ability to sleep, refuel, manage soreness, and perform again the next day.

Start where you are

Readiness plans scale to the person, not the other way around. Every training plan template in the app includes scale-down and scale-up guidance and starts from one of these places:

  • • Returning beginner — rebuilding a walking and trail base after time away.
  • • Recreationally active — adding outdoor-specific preparation to an existing routine.
  • • Experienced outdoor participant — sharpening for a specific objective.
  • • Rebuilding after time away — patient progression back to previous capability.
  • • Preparing for a major objective — a bigger trip than anything attempted before.
